2000 kVA power class

2000 kVA Diesel Generator (1600 kW)

A 2000 kVA diesel generator delivers 1600 kW at a 0.8 power factor and is the largest single-set class in this range. Installations at this rating are engineering projects rather than equipment purchases: transport, foundation, fuel storage and heat rejection all have to be designed alongside the machine.

Typical duty Standby or prime power for critical facilities and utility duty, normally in parallel with other sets

Specification envelope

What is normally inside a 2000 kVA set

Typical envelope for this power class. Every row is confirmed against the engine and alternator datasheets before order.
Item Typical range Why it matters
Engine Large V-configuration engine, 50-70 L class, electronic governor Fuel map, service intervals and the load step it can accept
Alternator Brushless, class H insulation, IP23 or IP44, permanent magnet exciter Voltage recovery and short-circuit performance on a large bus
Fuel consumption 288-324 L/h at 75% load (1200 kW) Daily deliveries and bulk storage sizing
Fuel autonomy 2300-2600 L per 8 h at 75% load; bulk tank farm for longer autonomy Whether a day tank feeding the set is required
Noise at 7 m 75-82 dB(A) containerised, lower with a specified acoustic package Planning consent and worker exposure
Weight 14-18 t on skid, 22-28 t containerised with tank Crane capacity, route survey and foundation design
Footprint Approximately 9-12 m x 3 m skid, or two 40 ft containers Compound layout and service access

Sizing

One 2000 kVA set or two 1000 kVA sets

  • Redundancy. Two 1000 kVA sets in parallel give N+1 for a 1600 kW bus and allow maintenance without an outage. A single 2000 kVA set gives neither, so critical facilities normally buy in multiples.
  • Transport and installation. Two smaller sets arrive in standard containers and can be lifted with commonly available cranes. A 2000 kVA machine needs heavier lifting, a road survey and a longer lead time for delivery.
  • Part-load efficiency. A large engine running at low load burns more fuel per kWh. Where the load grows in stages, several smaller sets commissioned over time are often the better fit.
  • Foundation and heat. Static weight plus dynamic loading drives the foundation design, and the radiator airflow of a machine this size is usually handled with remote cooling or ducted discharge.
  • Voltage level. At 2887 A per phase, distributing at 400 V over any distance is expensive; generating or stepping up to 11 kV is normal at this rating.

Applications

Typical 2000 kVA applications

  • Data centre campuses

Multi-megawatt halls built from parallel sets, with the fuel, cooling and controls designed as one system.

  • Utility and peaking duty

Grid support and peak shaving, where the set runs on load regularly and the fuel contract matters as much as the machine.

  • Oil, gas and marine

Process and port installations in remote locations, with air filtration, heating and remote monitoring specified.

  • Industrial plant power

Cement, steel and desalination sites as prime power or as a captive standby source for a defined process bus.

Options

Options usually specified at 2000 kVA

Option What it changes
Parallel control and protection Load sharing, synchronising, reverse power and load shedding across several sets
Medium voltage generation Generating at 11 kV with a step-up transformer, or generating at 400 V and stepping up
Remote cooling Radiators or cooling modules away from the container, with the pipework and controls included
Bulk fuel system Storage tank, transfer pumps, day tank, level alarms and bunding
Acoustic package Low-noise container or separate acoustic enclosure with attenuation at the intake and exhaust

Questions

2000 kVA questions we are asked

How many amps is a 2000 kVA generator?

2887 A per phase at 400 V three-phase, and about 3175 A at the standby rating. Because those currents make low-voltage distribution impractical beyond short runs, most installations at this rating generate or distribute at medium voltage.

How much fuel does a 2000 kVA generator use per hour?

Budget 288-324 L/h at 75% load, which is 1200 kW, and roughly 384-432 L/h at full load. That is about 7 cubic metres a day at 75% load, so bulk storage, bunding and a fuel supply plan are part of the project rather than an accessory.

Is a 2000 kVA set built as one engine or two?

Both exist. A single 2000 kVA machine uses one large engine, while an equivalent output can be built from two 1000 kVA sets running in parallel. The twin arrangement costs more in switchgear and space but gives redundancy and easier transport.

How is a 2000 kVA generator delivered and installed?

Containerised sets normally ship as one or two 40 ft units and are lifted by crane onto a prepared foundation, then connected to the fuel system, the cabling and the exhaust. A route survey is done before order, because weight, height and turning radii decide whether the delivery is straightforward.

Can it run as continuous power rather than standby?

At the prime power rating of 2000 kVA / 1600 kW, with a 10% overload for one hour in every twelve. The continuous power rating for the same machine is lower again. Running at the standby figure continuously is outside the rating definition and affects warranty and service intervals.

Scoping a 2000 kVA installation?

Send the load schedule, the redundancy requirement and the site plan. You will get the number of sets, the voltage level and the fuel and cooling package that fit.
